Sympathy

We extend our sympathy to Diana Buckley and family on the death of her father Albert Shorten recently. Many people travelled from this parish to attend the very large funeral which was held in St. Patrick’ Church, Farranthomas. Sympathy as well to the family and friends, especially his wife Johanna, of Teunis Reumerman of Ballygriffin near Killavullen who also has died.

Charleville Ecumenical Meeting
Church of Ireland people from this parish, Roman Catholics from around Charleville and Methodists from near Adair meet for a service in Charleville once a month. We were delighted to welcome the two Bishops of Limerick when we met in May.   They were two of the nineteen pairs of Bishops commissioned by Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury to go out on a united ecumenical mission. Canon Sean Cotter, Rev. Ruth Watt, Canon Tom Sherlock, Sister Martina, Brother Billy Ryan and the Rector were among those attending.

Mallow Field Club
Mallow Field Club recently visited the churches of St. John’s Buttevant and St. Mary’s Doneraile to hear something of their history. Of particular interest is the fact that the word “Steeplechase” came from a race between two men from the area. They raced cross-country from one steeple to the other.

Africa Day was held in Mallow as usual. We gathered to hear African music, watch dancing and we enjoyed a variety of African food. As always the hospitality was great. The Rector and many others enjoyed playing music on African drums from Uganda.
